Stamp Day: Comte d’Argenson
The “Comte d’Argenson” designates Marc-Pierre de Voyer de Paulmy (1696-1764), a central figure in the reign of Louis XV.
Secretary of State for War: He held this position from 1743 to 1757. He was the architect of the military reforms which led to the victory of Fontenoy in 1745.
Protector of Enlightenment: Despite his official position, he was a friend of philosophers. The Encyclopedia of Diderot and d'Alembert is also dedicated to him.
Founder of the Military School: He was behind the creation of the Royal Military School in Paris in 1751.
