Tunisian mosaics "Gazelle in the grass", end of 2nd century

This stamp presents an elegant gazelle represented in the middle of tall grass, from a mosaic of El Jem from the end of the 2nd century AD. The animal's alert posture and the finesse of its features demonstrate the exceptional mastery of local artists in capturing the grace of movement. This wild motif was very popular for decorating rich residences (domus), recalling the close link between urban habitat and the fauna of the surrounding steppes.
