30th Summit of the Organization of African Unity

This stamp commemorates the holding in Tunis, in June 1994, of the 30th summit of heads of state of the OAU (today African Union). The modern illustration features the organization's logo (the map of Africa surrounded by palm fronds) set within a green geometric graphic evoking growth and unity. At the top left, a stylized dove carries the Tunisian flag, symbolizing the role of Tunis as a land of peace and mediation on the continent. This summit was historic because it marked the entry of post-apartheid South Africa into the organization.
