European Otter - Lutra lutra
This high face value stamp is dedicated to the European Otter, locally called Al-Quenâa. We see an individual standing on its hind legs to observe the surroundings, while another swims nearby. The otter is considered an "umbrella" species: its presence guarantees clean water and an abundance of fish. In Tunisia, it has become extremely rare and is mainly confined to the wadis and dams of the northwest. This 1994 broadcast acts as a warning signal about the deterioration of the quality of waterways and calls for strict protection of this fascinating animal, symbol of the purity of the wild waters of the Regency.
