Houbara bustard - Chlamydotis undulata
The Houbara Bustard is the most emblematic bird of the Tunisian steppes and semi-deserts. Yosr Jamoussi's illustration is particularly complete, showing an adult female with her two chicks and eggs on the ground.
This stamp is a cry of alarm for conservation. The houbara bustard is a vulnerable species, once widespread, but now threatened by overhunting and habitat degradation.
The presence of eggs and chicks reminds us that Tunisia is a vital nesting area. The country has set up breeding centers and protected reserves to try to save this “symbol of the desert” from extinction.
