Tunis Cultural Capital 1997
This stamp commemorates the designation of Tunis as “Regional Cultural Capital” in 1997. The illustration by artist Abdelaziz Ben Mahmoud presents a dreamlike composition: a red Phoenician sailboat flown over by stylized and colorful faces, evoking the different civilizations that have shaped Tunisian identity.
The ship recalls the maritime and commercial origins of Carthage, while the faces symbolize cultural pluralism and tolerance. This show celebrates Tunis not only as a modern metropolis, but also as a historic crossroads of intellectual and artistic exchange in the Mediterranean.
