36th International Congress on the History of Medicine
This stamp commemorates the holding of this prestigious world congress in Tunis. Ahmed Fekih's illustration depicts three legendary figures of Arab and Mediterranean medicine in full scholarly discussion: Ahmed Ibn Al Jazzar (from Kairouan), Isaac Ibn Souleiman and Constantine Africanus.
Tunis is presented as the heir to an ancient medical tradition. Ibn Al Jazzar, author of the famous Traveler's Viaticum, symbolizes the golden age of the Kairouan school in the 10th century, whose work irrigated European medicine via the Salerno school.
