Gigthis archaeological site

This stamp features the ruins of Gigthis (near present-day Bou Grara), an ancient Punic city that became a prosperous Roman port on the Gulf of Gabès. We can see the structures of the forum and temples facing the sea.

Gigthis was a strategic junction point between the maritime routes of the Mediterranean and the caravan routes coming from the Sahara. The stamp highlights the importance of maritime trade in the history of southern Tunisia and the conservation of this major site.
