The archaeological site of Oudhna is located 30 kilometers southwest of Tunis, in the Oued Miliane valley, known since Antiquity for the fertility of its lands. Human occupation of the region dates back to pre-Roman times but the founding of the city dates back to the end of the first century BC. BC when a new colony was created populated by veterans of the 13th Roman legion. This colony, which bore the name of Uthina, reached its peak during the second century AD, notably under Hadrian. In the medieval period, the new occupants did not create a new town on the site and were content to exploit the existing ancient monuments. This period left significant quantities of Islamic ceramics which date back mainly to the 10th-11th centuries.
