The 19th edition of the Men's World Handball Championship took place from January 23 to February 6, 2005 in Tunisia. This is the second time the competition has taken place in Africa after the 1999 World Championship in Egypt.
Spain won its first title by beating Croatia, the reigning world champion and Olympic champion six months earlier, in the final.

In the semi-final, France lost to Croatia then found Tunisia for bronze: in a committed and tense game, the French snatched the victory by a goal, saving at the same time their coach Claude Onesta.
