20th Anniversary of the Arab Maghreb Union
The 20th anniversary of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), celebrated in February 2009, marked two decades since the signing of the Marrakech Treaty on February 17, 1989 by Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia. This anniversary highlighted a mixed record, marked by an unfulfilled dream of integration, persistent political blockages (notably Western Sahara) and a very low rate of intra-regional trade.
