Pope Victor I

This stamp inaugurates a series dedicated to popes of African (Berber) origin by presenting Victor I, who was the 14th pope of the Catholic Church at the end of the 2nd century. Originally from Roman Africa (present-day Tunisia), he is famous for having imposed the celebration of Sunday for Easter and for having introduced Latin into the liturgy. The illustration reminds us that Tunisia was one of the first and most brilliant centers of early Christianity. It is an enhancement of a little-known historical heritage which testifies to the intellectual and spiritual influence of the Tunisian land on the ancient world.
