The Ksours of Southern Tunisia
The ksours of southern Tunisia are fortified Berber granaries, mainly located in the governorates of Tataouine and Médenine. Built on ridges or on the plain, these “desert castles” were historically used to store crops in superimposed ghorfas. Witnesses to a unique rural civilization, several sites, including Chenini and Ouled Soltane, are eligible for UNESCO.
