was a Tunisian writer, agricultural engineer and left-wing activist, considered an emblematic figure of the fight for freedoms and democracy in Tunisia. Gilbert Naccache defined himself above all as Tunisian, refusing any form of Zionism which he considered colonialist. He often suffered a double punishment as a political dissident and a member of the Jewish minority.
He died in Paris on December 26, 2020 and was buried, according to his wishes, in the square of free thinkers at the Borgel cemetery in Tunis, in the presence of the highest authorities of the State.
He is famous for having written his masterpiece clandestinely in prison on cigarette packet wrappers.
